BENEFITS OF VACUUM KILN DRYING
Vacuum kiln drying wood has numerous benefits: it is fast, efficient, and keeps wood looking beautiful.
- Cut drying time down to only a few weeks instead of months or years: Lowering the atmospheric pressure in the wood makes ALL of the water bound in the wood more accessible at lower temperatures reducing drying time
- Reduce drying defects: less warping, cupping, cracking, degrade than conventional kiln or air drying due to faster drying at a lower temperature
- Retain grain and color: Conventional kiln drying can mute the natural color of the wood due to the time and heat associated with that drying process, vacuum kilns retain it
- Eliminate the risk of pests or mold: Most woods reach an internal temperate of 160° to kill pests that may be present in the wood, and stop mold in its tracks

What is a vacuum kiln?
It is a kiln that utilizes a vacuum to lower the temperature at which water boils (evaporates). Wood is stronger at a lower temperature. By drying it at a lower temperature we can speed up the drying time without hurting the wood. Vacuum pressure also sucks water from the core to the outside of the wood.

How long does it usually take to dry a piece of wood?
It usually takes a week per inch thickness for previously airdried wood (<32% moisture), and a week and a half per inch for wet wood.

Does it matter what species of wood I have?
Yes. Some species of wood take longer than others to dry. Though hardwoods typically take longer than soft woods to dry, other factors such as moisture content and size play more significant factors in determining drying time.

What is considered airdried wood?
For our purposes, previously airdried wood implies that it has a moisture content of 32% or less.

Does my wood need to be stickered when I deliver it?
Yes, we recommend at least a 3/4 inch square sticker between each slab. We can also sticker your wood for you for an additional charge. More info on stickering.

Our goal is to positively impact our environment by reducing waste from urban logging while also making woodworking more accessible to everyday people. Urban Log Studios is a production woodturning studio and 4000 board-feet capacity vacuum kiln. We work with local tree services, arborists, cities, and homeowners to produce affordable, quality handmade turned items from wood harvested in urban areas. This helps to continue to sequester the carbon these trees have absorbed over their lifetime. We rent kiln time to local sawyers, homeowners, woodworkers, and DIY enthusiasts, as well as use it to dry rough turned items and wood salvaged by Urban Log Studios. We believe everyone should have access to quality kiln drying services, no matter your experience level or volume.
