Kiln News – February 2022

Logo
Going, Going, Gone…
This month went by so fast that we couldn’t even get the newsletter out until March! A lot going on here at Urban Log Studios, one of the biggest activities is prepping for the Washington State Evergreen Spring Home Show where we will be showing all of our wonderful home décor lines, including a new line of lamps (pics to follow in next month’s newsletter). We will be in the main building all three days, so if you’re up for it, stop by and say “Hi!”
Life isn’t interesting if you don’t try something new, so this month Andrew tried turning Osage orange, and it was a BEAST. This sucker was so hard that it broke the solid rock maple handle of his 3/4” bowl gouge…and Andrew cried, a little. But the bowl did get done, and sent off to the artist that requested it – we wish him the best of luck with his plans to hand carve the detail.
February was also the month of “Ancillary Activities” that no one wants to do but has to be done. As we announced last month, we launched our brand new Milling Services with a large capacity surfacing table (AKA SLAB MASTER 360), and after running a few big pieces through discovered that, even with dust skirting around the router, we couldn’t keep up with the amount of dust created, and that the dust collection system needed to be expanded immediately unless we wanted to start carrying snow shovels when entering the shop.
Last but not least we have had the kiln running all month with a good sized load of mixed species – a huge monkey puzzle slab that stole our hearts (see below), black locust and a ton of Maple. Everything is drying out real well, and we plan on unloading this weekend if everything checks out.As for March (now this month), we are about halfway booked but are expecting a full run from a single customer in April, so if you would like to get in some pieces in this next run please let us know. Feel free to give us a call at (425)312-3885 or email us and we’ll get you scheduled in.
